Who's ready for spring time?  I don't know about you but I certainly am.  My hands are just itching to get into the soil and start planting early spring flowers and ornamentals.  Before you head over to the local nursery consider trimming your dormant trees.

1.  BEFORE NEW GROWTH STARTS
While we are getting close to spring time in South Louisiana most of our trees are not actively growing.  This means it's a lot easier to see the limbs and branches that need trimming.   Look for dead and diseased branches and remove them.  
2.  EASIER TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO SHAPE
Sometimes we need to help trees grow in a certain direction.  Summer-flowering trees such as Crape Myrtle, Oleander and Althea have not set flower buds just yet.  Now is a great time to shape these trees.  Be careful not to overdue the trimming.
3.  BEFORE HURRICANE SEASON
Here is possibly the most important reason of all.  Don't wait until hurricane season is upon us to take a look at those pecan trees or oak trees.  While these trees are dormant it will be much easier to see what branches are hanging over fencing, structures such as a shed or even your house, power lines and such.  This type of trimming will usually require hiring a professional to do the job. 
4.  TRIMMING CAN IMPROVE FLOWER OR FRUIT PRODUCTION
